HLA

High Level Architecture (HLA) is a general purpose architecture for distributed computer simulation systems.

The High Level Architecture (HLA) was developed by the U.S. department of defense (DoD) and its primary purpose or function was to integrate and facilitate the interoperability of disparate simulations that were running on a variety of different platforms, and to provide a common framework for their operation together. HLA is intended to have applicability across the complete range of training, analysis, mission control, and engineering functions. It provides an open, standards-based method of implementing distributed simulation environments.

HLA was designed with the premise that no single monolithic simulation could satisfy the requirements of all simulation users, and that a framework was required that would be flexible and modular, platform agnostic, and support future technological enhancements. It was designed to support the interoperability of distributed simulations and support the reuse of their components, and it is constructed of modular components with defined functionality and interfaces. Using HLA, computer simulations can communicate with other computer simulations regardless of the computing platforms.

The Standard

HLA consists of the following components:

  • An Interface Specification defines how simulators interface to the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI), and the RTI provides the software services necessary to provide and HLA-compliant simulation
  • An Object Model Template (OMT) specifies a common format for the information that is communicated or shared between simulations, and how it is documented
  • HLA rules that specify the requirements and responsibility that each simulation (Federate) must follow in order to be compliant to the HLA standard
  • Communication between simulations is managed by an RTI that provides a programming library and an application programming interface (API) compliant to the interface specifications. An HLA compliant simulation is referred to as a federate. Multiple simulations connected via the RTI using a common Object Model Template (OMT) are referred to as a federation. HLA is an IEEE 1516 standard.
Presagis HLA Support

Presagis software began supporting the HLA standard in 1998, and the visualization and simulation portfolio of portfolio of products support all versions of the HLA standard. Leveraging the HLA expertise of Pitch Technologies, HLA standard support includes HLA 1.3, IEEE 1516-2000, and HLA Evolved (Fully HLA compliant), & verified by DMSO(HLA 1.3, IEEE 1516-2000). Presagis provides a fully integrated and tested simulation and HLA based infrastructure solution, providing efficient, high performance and reliable connectivity to distributed network simulations, scaling from local to national and multinational environments.
