ROME REBORN \ REBUILDING ANCIENT ROME FOR THE 21st CENTURY
The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia (www.iath.virginia.edu ) creates authentic 3D computer models of significant sites around the world, including James Madison's Montpelier, Colonial Williamsburg, and Hadrian's Villa. The institute is committed to achieving the highest possible scientific accuracy for its real-time and internet projects. To achieve this level of authentication, the team there works in close collaboration with leading scholars and cultural authorities as well as technology and computer graphics (CG) specialists. They also employ advanced technology, including Creator from Presagis for content creation.
The institute's largest project to date is a virtual model of the city of Ancient Rome at its peak in 320 AD. Ultimately, this historically accurate digital re-creation will offer a comprehensive illustration of the Eternal City's urban development over the fifteen centuries from the late Bronze Age, when humans first settled in the area, and the early Middle Ages.
The project has its origins in 1974 when Professor Bernie Frischer, the institute's director, first visited Rome. It was during this visit that Frischer, who holds a PhD in classical languages and literature, first saw the "Plastico di Roma Antica," a physical model of the ancient city.
This 1/250 scale model of Ancient Rome took over 40 years to construct, measures 60 feet across, and can only be viewed from a balcony above.

UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO
These images display the Casselberry Interchange and the University of Buffalo North Campus, an aspect of the virtual tour of the university. Using Creator, this tool was created for both current and prospective students. The virtual tour allows users to visit the campus without setting foot on it. This tool links information about the campuses - text, AV, and websites - all in the same application.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT \ GENERAL DYNAMICS UK
General Dynamics UK Limited has more than fifteen years of experience in the design, development and manufacture of advanced digital mapping solutions. SoftMap is its platform independent software solution offering rapid, intelligent, coherent and precise multi-layered digital map, navigation and terrain displays through to full tactical situational awareness. It provides extensive functionality and supports a wide range of raster, matrix and vector map formats making it suitable for all air, maritime and ground based applications that require advanced digital map/geographic information system (GIS) capability in both 2-D and 3-D. Originally designed to meet the demands of airborne embedded systems use, SoftMap has a proven in service history where it is deployed across a several aircraft platforms and is also being adopted for ground based situational awareness applications.
At Avionics '09 in Amsterdam, General Dynamics demonstrated the SoftMap product in the Presagis booth. The upcoming VAPS XT 3.0 release will include an off-the-shelf integration to the General Dynamics UK SoftMap product. This integration will allow VAPS XT users to more easily develop both PC and embedded digital moving-map applications with user generated overlays to serve the market need for better situational awareness on the ground, the sea and in the air.

COMBINE THE GRAPHICS RENDERING FORCES OF VEGA PRIME AND VAPS XT
When creating complex simulation and training applications, it is often required to use more than one product to reach a final goal. An example of this would be the creation of a flight simulator that needs to display a 3D representation of the pilot's view, but also needs to render information about the flight instruments in the form of a heads-up display.
