Interoperability is vital in modeling & simulation. Increasingly, users are requiring standards to be applied to their simulation applications, and, while many software vendors must adapt to keep pace with demand, Presagis continues to stand at the forefront of innovation. By focusing on the use and development of industry standards, Presagis is leading the way by providing innovative low-cost interoperable solutions.
This issue of our newsletter focuses on our development of industry standards as well as on our interoperable solutions. In addition, we will be highlighting some of our recent news and events.
2008 has already been a significant year at Presagis. We released several product updates and have had an even greater presence at industry events. Most recently, our COTS software solutions were highlighted at GDC, Avionics, and The Terrain Summit.
interoperability \ standards As simulation applications become more complex, developers are finding it necessary to separate their projects into manageable parts. In response, targeted software solutions are being developed to address specific problems that arise in application development. By dividing expertise, users are able to develop more accurate and reusable software that solves distinct problems. But, because these problems must be addressed within a global and complex simulation, the need for interoperability has greatly increased.
Interoperability introduces a flexibility that facilitates a more cost effective integration and verification process with increased reusability. By reducing the need for costly CPU processes and by allowing developers to reuse simulation elements instead of re-developing them for each new context, interoperability realizes significant cost savings.
Interoperability also allows users to define the elements that a simulation application can share. For example, a classified application can be designed to share only unclassified data with other applications.
In addition, governments worldwide are actively promoting reusability and interoperability in simulations through the use of specific communication standards, such as DIS or HLA.
Presagis products support the latest in interoperabiltiy standards, and we are committed to the adoption and use of both open and industry standards as the primary communications protocols between simulation applications. At Presagis, we believe that interoperability amongst simulation tools and applications is vital since, as project requirements grow in scale and complexity, applications must work together in order to produce efficient results.
What are the different simulation communications protocols and what do they offer?
High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) are the leading simulation communications protocols currently in use to bridge simulation applications. Presagis simulation and visualization software solutions have been developed to support these protocols.
High Level Architecture (HLA)
HLA is a general purpose architecture for distributed computer simulation systems. Using HLA, computer simulations can communicate with other computer simulations regardless of their computing platforms. Communication between simulations is managed by a runtime infrastructure (RTI). The RTI provides a programming library and an application programming interface (API) that are compliant with the interface specification.
Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS)
DIS is a communications standard for conducting real-time platform-level war-gaming across multiple host computers. This mature protocol is used by many military organizations worldwide. The current version of the DIS application protocol defines 67 different PDU types that encapsulate all levels of information about a simulation, including entity states, logistics, radio communications, and warfare. A simulation application must support specified PDUs to send/receive this type of information over a distributed simulation.
product focus \ sim onenet
SIM OneNet is a software application that solves the problem of interoperability between disparate simulation applications by allowing users to connect, bridge, and monitor different simulation applications together. By using the protocol adapters or by creating your own with the API in SIM OneNet, you can bridge any simulation communications protocols that you prefer, including bridging HLA networks with DIS networks.
What's New in SIM OneNet v.1.1?
Presagis is pleased to announce the release of SIM OneNet v.1.1. Below are some of the enhancements available with this upgrade:
New Features
- Capability to save and reload workspace: Custom workspaces can
now be easily saved and reused. - FlexLM v9.2 License Manager: No longer requires the use of dongles.
- Dockable toolbars: Move toolbars to the top, bottom, or side of the SIM OneNet window as needed.
- Full Window/Screen display: Only tabbed documents are visible when Full Window is selected. Conversely, all windows are visible when Full Screen is selected.
Improvements to Existing Features
- RPR FOM v2.0 / DIS 95 interoperability: This new Federation Object Model (FOM) provides improved interoperability with HLA protocols.
- Support Pitch RTI adapter.

Avionics
Presagis had a strong presence at this year's Avionics show featuring a number of demos and presentations, The theme at the Presagis booth was integrated avionics solutions and featured our powerful HMI software, VAPS XT, running on a GE Fanuc embedded system. We also showed the integration of our HMI products with General Dynamics SoftMap to create a cutting-edge joing HMI and moving map demo.
Presagis HMI software was also showcased in a number of our partners' booths, including Barco who had our embedded display solutions running on their monitors.
Our DO-178B qualifiable VAPS QCG software received a lot of interest at the show with many of the attendees wanting to learn more about our DO-178B Level A compliant code generation tool. To find out more about how COTS software can help with your DO-178B certified avionics projects, read our informative Q&A.
Another big topic of interest at the show was HMI tools to address ARINC 661. Many prospects were pleased to see the ARINC 661 capability in VAPS XT and were interested in hearing about the product's success with end users including AgustaWestland and Rockwell Collins.
Terrain Summit Presagis was a proud sponsor of this year's Terrain Summit and presented the latest innovations of our terrain generation software. The Terra Vista software suite, one of our leading products, was a popular demonstration, and attendees were truly impressed with the realism of our Vega Prime Marine demo.
A number of Presagis representatives also gave presentations at the show. Judith Pafford spoke about the Presagis vision as a leading terrain and content creation software provider. Kenny Hebert presented a paper entitled "Data Translation and Reuse with the DART Method" that highlighted Terra Vista DART 's ability to create and correlate OneSAF Terrain Format as well as to translate and enhance other existing databases, including US government standards and master databases.
