Simthetiq - Best 3D Model

The “Best 3D Model” award is given to the organization that has developed the best 3D model using Presagis Creator. The criteria for evaluation for this award include excellence in efficiency and appearance, as well as the model’s realism. This year’s “Best 3D Model” award recipient is Simthetiq for their 3D model of an A-10C Warthog.

This fully articulated and accurate 3D model of an A-10C Warthog was build for the US Air Force for their A10 trainer. Requirements for the model included the ability to simulate air-to-air refueling capabilities as well as reconfigurable armaments.

Working with Presagis Creator allowed Simthetiq to achieve the ideal balance between performance, realism, and functionality in the development of the A-10C 3D model. For example, the development team at Simthetiq used Creator to manipulate the level of detail of the model’s highly sophisticated cockpit by masking out the instruments when viewed from the exterior of the aircraft. In addition, the new Radiosity tools in Creator made it possible for the team to capture and transfer the aircraft’s lighting information directly onto the textures as light maps, fundamentally increasing the model’s realism.

The team also used vertex normals editing in the configuration of the directional light points, enabling the possibility of night-time simulations, and implemented high resolution textures to greatly improve squadron and aircraft identification and to facilitate pilot-to-pilot communication capabilities. And, finalizing the A-10C through the use of the Creator viewer also allowed the team at Simthetiq to accurately preview both the normal maps and reflection map real-time shaders and to produce an exceptionally realistic and high fidelity 3D model.
