SoftMap is a platform-independent rendering engine that reads source map data and presents a composite result that combines vector, raster and matrix-based information. Within the context of a VAPS XT application, a Digital Map object using SoftMap can be instantiated and configured within a display to render multiple layers of map data. In addition to this, VAPS XT symbology can be created and overlaid on top of the Digital Map and can be precisely positioned using some container objects that will convert Lat/Lon coordinates to X/Y screen coordinates. These overlaid symbols can be simple vectorial graphics or more complex elements with multiple states and moving parts.
With these components in place, a VAPS XT application can send information on the position of an ownship to the Digital Map object to automatically see the map position update, along with all other tracks and symbology being properly adjusted. The Digital Map object also gives users access to other SoftMap functionality such as drawing inter-visibility lines between tracks and coloring the map to indicate current height above terrain of the ownship.

If you're interested in learning more about VAPS XT, SoftMap, and the new interface between these products, you can watch the web seminar that was presented on the subject or, if you are a VAPS XT customer, try out the evaluation version that ships with VAPS XT 3.1. Keep an ear open during the webinar for my interventions towards the end of the presentation when I show a demo application that uses the new object.
Beyond the new integration with SoftMap, VAPS XT 3.1 also offers support for Visual Studio 2008. You can obtain the new version through a download from your Presagis support Dashboard or request a physical media shipment by contacting VAPS XT support.
