Stockholm, Sweden - ITEC - June 10, 2008 - Presagis, a leading provider of commercial-off-the shelf (COTS) modeling, simulation and embedded display graphics software, and the developer of OpenFlight, today announced that it is making the Common Database (CDB) specification openly available to the modeling and simulation community. By delivering a common database format to support all modeling and simulation applications, the CDB specification allows scenario developers to choose from a wider variety of applications and connect disparate simulation systems.
"Putting CDB in the public domain gives the global modeling and simulation community the opportunity to reap the benefits of this specification, and adds to the already robust stable of standards supported by our company," said Patrice Commune, President, Presagis. "Increased accessibility, combined with ongoing support and development of the specification, delivers a new level of industry collaboration that will help address the correlation and reusability issues experienced when integrating different processes in modeling and simulation."
Originally developed for USSOCOM by CAE (NYSE: CGT; TSX: CAE), the implementation of CDB delivers a single database format that enables users to reduce mission rehearsal time and storage costs, and increase mission responsiveness. Moving forward, Presagis will be responsible for the ongoing development and support of CDB as a publicly available specification and will incorporate feedback and insight from the user community to advance the specification.
"With a history in the development of modeling and simulation software and standards, Presagis has experience working closely to meet the needs of its customers and the market," said Nick Giannias, Vice President of Research and Technology. "Presagis will apply best practices learned in its management of the OpenFlight standard to CDB to ensure the entire modeling and simulation community can take full advantage of the specification. Working closely with users will ensure that CDB will continue to address the challenges faced when creating synthetic environments."
CDB, a unique database structure that is both a source data repository, a runtime format and, now, a commercial open standard, ensures that subsystems such as computer-generated forces and visual systems all tap into the same data source - effectively eliminating traditional data correlation issues. CDB reduces the creation and modification of synthetic environment databases significantly, ensuring that information updates and integration of new data sources occurs in real-time.
A natural addition to existing standards already supported by Presagis, the CDB specification is now openly available on the Presagis website. The company is also creating a user forum to ensure that the ongoing development of the specification is based on user input and market requirements. Regularly scheduled user group meetings are also being established to keep CDB development on track with market needs and to ensure the open standard evolves with these needs in mind.
