The 10th annual Avionics exhibition and conference is now bigger than ever in its new larger home at the PTA in Amsterdam. The 2010 conference aims to offer an enhanced level of content, with a multitrack programme and variety of workshops and master classes. Workshop: Challenges and Solutions for Certifying C++ Object-Oriented Embedded Software Applications - Presented with Wind River
C++ object-oriented technology provides many advantages for developers over using standard ANSI C, such as added design flexibility, inheritance, polymorphism, data encapsulation and better type safety. However, questions still surround the use of C++ object-oriented technology for safety-critical embedded systems.
Wind River provides Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Certification Artefacts for its VxWorks 653 Operating System, as used on aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and A400M. The VxWorks 653 operating system includes a certified runtime subset of C++ for use by C++ application developers. Wind River will cover the runtime support provided for C++ and the evidence provided for DO-178B certification.
Presagis provides human-machine interface development tools for developing C++ object-oriented graphical applications. The Presagis VAPS XT-178 modelling tool provides DO-178B certifiable C++ code for embedded systems.
Seaweed Systems, now a part of Presagis, has extensive experience developing DO-178B certifiable software drivers for C++ applications.
In this paper, the authors describe various methods that can be used to develop complete DO-178B certifiable C++ object-oriented applications, present example success stories, and propose a joint methodology.
